10 Romantic Things To Do In Devon
When we think of romance, words such as love and beauty come to mind, which is something Devon has always had to offer. Located in the heart of the South West is Devon somewhere known for its amazing natural scenery and authentic feel. In my eyes, Devon is one of the most Romantic places to visit, so if you’re thinking of spending a romantic weekend away then here are 10 romantic things to do in Devon.
1. A romantic dinner on the steam railway
There are of course different ways to be romantic and a traditional experience can make you feel like those old-time romantic movies like Casablanca. A romantic dinner for two combined with a traditional steam train and beautiful views of the Devon countryside gives you a recipe for romance. South Devon Railways offers dining experiences and beautiful scenery as does Dartmouth Steam Railway.
2. Picnic on Dartmoor
This has to be one of my favourite romantic things to do in Devon and an experience in itself as Dartmoor is so vast you get beauty wherever you go. Packing a picnic is the best way to explore Dartmoor at your own pace there are plenty of great walks for every level of walker and some exceptional places to visit. Some areas are hidden away like Bellever Tor and others like Venford Reservoir are harder to miss either way even in the summertime you will have your own privacy as Dartmoor is so big.
3. Relaxing on the beach
One of my favourite things to do together is head down to the beach at night and watch for shooting stars. Because the air is so clear in Devon on a good night you can see many shooting starts darting across the sky. I advise taking warm clothes and blankets as it gets cold by the sea, especially in the winter. Depending on the beach your visiting a great little extra is to light a small fire and toast marshmallows whilst basking in its warmth. Make sure you check the beaches for their rules as they are all different and may not allow fires, Slapton is a good one.
4. Go for luxury
If you feel like a romantic getaway where you can feel totally relaxed then Devon has some of the most luxurious accommodations in the UK. Places like Bovey Castle offer luxury in everything they do, take it easy and enjoy their spa facilities or be adventurous and let them take you exploring on the moors in a Land Rover Defender. Another great place to stay is The Burgh Island Hotel this hotel offers similar luxuries but with its breathtaking views across Bantham Beach it’s a choice between the coast or the moors and both are great romantic things to do in Devon.
5. Wildlife Adventures
There are many ways in which you can experience Devon’s wildlife and is one of the most popular activities to do as a couple it has to be included. Devon boasts one of the largest zoo’s in the UK and leads the world in ethical trading, with over 2000 creatures and a large variety of plant life Paignton Zoo is a wonderful place to immerse yourself as a couple. If your looking for something a bit more natural then a trip to Lundy Island won’t disappoint. Lundy is located just off the North Devon coastline and is known as the UK’s Galapagos Islands your main event here are the Puffins and it’s not unusual to see Dolphins and Whales frolicking about in the waters. Devon also has the largest aquarium in the UK located in Plymouth its well worth a visit for a couple of days out.
6. Relaxing Spa day
If you fancy relaxing on your romantic break one of the best locations in my opinion is Salcombe. Salcombe has great places to eat out, beautiful walks, lots of activities to join in with, and one of the top spas in Devon. The Salcombe Harbour Hotel and Spa is a popular destination for couples and topped off with the opportunity to stay in the beautiful seaside town of Salcombe it’s simply a must on any romantic getaway.
7. Dartmouth River Cruise
This is a popular activity for many people visiting Devon and equally one which couples will enjoy. Cruise down the famous River Dart relaxing in front of beautiful countryside, passing historic places such as Agatha Christies Greenway Manor. Depending on the type of tour you go for, you will get to explore historic towns such as Totnes and Dartmouth, as the ferry goes between these two towns you are free to roam around them, although do check times as it may not be possible if you plan on returning by boat.
8. Cookery Classes
Devon is known for high-quality food, with talented chefs and amazingly fresh ingredients from local producers Devon is one of the best places to hone your cooking skills. Whether you share the cooking at home or one of you is always in the kitchen it’s a great experience to learn some new skills together. Ashburton Cookery School is the leading cookery school in Devon and has so much to offer in different styles of cooking, take day classes or use the entire weekend and include a stay in Ashburton.
9. Wine Tasting
Romantic settings often involve far-flung destinations like the Italian countryside, however, a small part of Italy lives in Devon. The UK’s wine industry is booming and some of the best wine comes from the southwest. Sharpham Vineyard is one of the best places in Devon to experience beautiful vineyards and taste authentic Devon wine. Make a day of it and take one of their tours, learn all about the wine-making process and finish the day with a meal out in the nearby town of Totnes.
10. Catch a Show
The theatre always offers a romantic feeling, immerse yourself in a live stage show at the Princess Theatre in Torquay or Theatre Royal in Plymouth. There is always a large choice of shows to go and see and after exploring somewhere like Plymouth you will need to sit down and relax. Try catching an on-screen movie at the Barn Cinema in Dartington, this Cinema has an old timely feel to it and is set on the beautiful grounds of Dartington Hall it’s another one of the best romantic things to do in Devon.
